Platform overview

Physical labs, thoughtfully connected.

SmarterLabs is the infrastructure between a learner’s browser and a real engineering workbench—combining safe hardware control, live measurement, guided learning, and fair access.

Why we built it

Practical engineering should not depend on being in the right room at the right hour.

Traditional laboratories are constrained by space, opening hours, and the cost of duplicating instruments. SmarterLabs makes a carefully managed physical rig available beyond those limits—without turning the experiment into a simulation.

Students still work with real components and real measurements. Educators gain a repeatable environment for practical teaching. Institutions can extend the value of existing equipment to more learners.

System architecture

One experiment. Four coordinated layers.

Each layer has a clear job—from protecting the physical rig to presenting useful measurements in the browser.

01
PHYSICAL

Instrumented lab rig

National Instruments DAQ hardware, switching, sensors, and circuit fixtures produce authentic measurements.

Hardware layer
02
CONTROL

Lab host service

A dedicated service manages sessions, validates control commands, and returns the rig to a safe state.

MQTT + services
03
REAL TIME

Live data transport

Efficient streaming carries waveform samples and device state to the active learner with low latency.

SignalR
04
EXPERIENCE

Browser workbench

A focused Blazor interface brings controls, observations, lab guidance, and SmartTA into one place.

Web platform
Designed for the whole lab

Useful at every level of the institution.

ST

Students

More opportunities to practice, repeat experiments, and build confidence with real hardware.

ED

Educators

Structured experiments, observable sessions, and a practical environment that supports teaching goals.

IN

Institutions

Higher equipment utilization and broader access without duplicating every physical workbench.
